A Prequel

Victor thought he was the luckiest guy in the world. He had everything a man could wish for: a good job, a cheerful bank balance, a beautiful girlfriend, even better hair. In fact, he had just spent the evening with his gorgeous girlfriend, discussing the possibility of living together. As soon as his lease was up, they would start looking for place to start their new life.

Victor was too preoccupied by pondering his wonderful life to notice that he had taken a few wrong turns on his way home.

He didn't realize his error until he spotted a small gnome to the left of the footpath. What an odd statue, he thought. I don't think I've seen this here before.

Oh, plumbbobs, it's a whole yard full of them! What kind of weirdo would collect these ugly things? They must be new to Jennerica, don't know much about our ways. They don't know much about keeping a tidy lawn, either.

He turned back to inspect the first sculpture.

"Hey, little guy," Victor said softly. "What are you? Awfully funny looking, whatever you are. I bet Marsha would just love one of you."

Victor looked back up and considered the yard. I bet nobody notice if just one went missing. It'd save me the embarrassment of having to buy one, too.

As he checked the road to make certain there weren't any passing cars or pedestrians to see him take the gnome, someone on the porch cleared their throat loudly.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?"

"I, um, well, I was, er --" Victor was startled. He hadn't expected someone to be sitting on the front porch; any normal Jennerican tried to stay inside during summer evenings unless they had to travel. Although, this lady didn't exactly look normal.

"Save your spit, it was a rhetorical question. I know what you were doing."

"No, no, really, it's not what you think." Victor was stalling for time so he could think up a good excuse. "I was, uh, I was just going to check to see if there was a price tag or a company name on the bottom so I could buy one for my girlfriend."

The lie didn't appease the woman. She kept approaching, her terrifying glare growing more determined with every step.

Words started spilling out of Victor's mouth. He hoped one would be the magic key to getting this woman to forget the whole ordeal and let him go home safely. "My girlfriend just loves ugly things like this. She's got this pug dog, you know the ones, with the squashed in faces. Real ugly. I thought maybe she'd like one of these, since she likes her dumb dog so much. We're going to be moving in together real soon, you know. Well, you don't know, but now you do. Anyway, she might like one of these for our yard, when we get one. She --"

.
"Shut up! Just shut up!" The woman half-hissed, half-barked the command at him. "You were going to steal it, but I'll make you pay for it instead."

The woman whipped out a wand from underneath her jacket. I don't think she meant with money, Victor's mind screamed at him.

He fell to his knees and begged, "Please, I'll do anything, pay anything, if you'll just let me go home. I'll mow your lawn for you! No charge! Just let me go!"

She ignored his pleas and began to rotate her wand.

"Double, double toil and trouble,
Turn this Sim's life into rubble."

"May misery follow him wherever he roams
because he tried to steal one of my gnomes!"

Victor staggered to his feet. He felt completely disoriented and barely heard the witch tell him how to break the spell. Something about suffering his share of injustice and misfortune.

All he comprehended clearly was her laughter and her malicious words, "Hope you enjoy your new look!"

"Now run away home, my ugly, run away home."

Victor didn't need the encouragement. As soon as the stars cleared from his vision, he was gone.

He never looked back.

So, this will be the newest inhabitant of New Jennerica. I couldn't resist adding a little backstory for him. He had to have a reason for becoming the victim of a Miserable Sims Challenge, and messing with one of my gnomies was a good reason. Yep, the witch is my SelfSim.

I probably won't relate the challenge in true story style. This was a one-time thing. I had no idea how time-consuming it was to find the poses, take the pictures, and write the story. This took longer than I'd like to admit, and it was just fifteen pictures. Storytellers, I have a new respect for your work.

I loved it! Your selfsim makes a nice witch. I love her little yard.
I can't wait to read about Victor! :)

Thanks! You should see my SelfSim's nose from the side. Most definitely a witchy nose.

I had a lot of fun decorating her yard. My favorite part is the teddy bear gnome peeking around the corner. Totally something I'd do IRL.

Victor's update will be coming as soon as I can edit all 128 pictures :{ Hopefully, I'll be able to cut down on the number of them, too. It was definitely a lot of fun to play this challenge so far.

I actually had never heard of it before and I am about to go read what it is about.

Excellent! I really, really like it that you've taken such a varied method of both telling your BACC entries and the stories behind each of the residents. It is quite brilliant.

I am vastly amused at the gnome hiding out in the tree. :D

I'm looking forward to this miserable sims challenge, very much so!

Also, your self sim makes an excellent witch. Really like her house and her yard stuffed full of gnomes.

Thank you so much! The challenge rules provided the framework for the backstory - an evil witch cursed the Sim - but I thought people would need to know why he was cursed. It's certainly made me feel a bit better about letting bad things happen to him.

Ninja gnome loved his hiding spot in the tree a lot. I don't know why I put him there in the first place, but it start a bit of trend in the pictures.

I'm in love with her front yard, too. In real life, I limit my collection of gnomes to ones with weapons, so I only have about three.

Ohhh fun. :D Looking forward to seeing them in the challenge.

Thanks! The first week will be up as soon as I finished editing the pictures & write it up... Hopefully I can cut it down to a reasonable size. The challenge is definitely drama inducing.

Great POV! I love your simself's garden! Victor is in for some trouble!

Thank you, thank you, and oh, yes he is. It's been quite fun playing him, and writing this little prequel, too. I can't wait to share the actual week with everyone.

Victor Valjean.
Miserable Sims.
YES PLEASE. (I just got done with a production of Les Mis, so this made my day.)

I can't wait to see how his life turns out!!!
untidyfanuntidyfan on May 18th, 2011 01:17 am (UTC)
I'm afraid it won't follow Les Mis or Jean Valjean's character too closely, but I think Victor will develop some of Jean's nobility and other positive character traits after a time. I hope to draw a couple of other parallels, but time will tell if I'm able to.

That said, I hope you'll still enjoy it. It's quite a fun challenge so far.

Oh, I'm sure! I just really appreciated the reference :)

I can't wait to see what you'll do! It really does LOOK like quite the challenge.

Awesome! I just wanted to make sure I didn't mislead. I'm glad you got the reference :D

Hilarious! I loved it! Especially the ninja gnome in the tree. Lol, truly great!
untidyfanuntidyfan on May 18th, 2011 01:19 am (UTC)
Thanks! Ninja gnome was one of the best things about setting up the shots. Ninja gnome is very much a ninja.

Wonderful pics! And great story as well :) The yard looks awesome, I love all the gnomes - looks like somebody was having a lot of fun ;)
untidyfanuntidyfan on May 18th, 2011 09:38 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I was quite nervous releasing this, because I'm no simtopi or skellington7d. I definitely had a lot of fun decorating the yard. If I lived in a less urban area, I'd probably load up my yard with them in real life, too.
selenaq13selenaq13 on May 18th, 2011 08:47 pm (UTC)
Oh no! Victor what will you do now?
untidyfanuntidyfan on May 18th, 2011 09:42 pm (UTC)
*cackles evilly* Victor will manage, but just barely. At least, he hasn't died his first week.
