BACC: The Higgins Family, Week Three
There have been so many things thwarting this post for the past week.

First, LiveJournal is driving me nuts lately. Apologies if I've been double-posting on anyone's LJ, I've just had trouble getting it do anything. Browse my friends' page? Refresh five times and maybe I'll see it. Check that news post about extending paid accounts? Still haven't read it yet. I've got this post backed up as a text document on my desktop in case it won't post. And it probably won't.

Then there's been work. I was a tax preparer, and the season ended Monday, so I spent my limited free time in panic mode, searching for a new job. Bluck. At least I've got a bonus coming my way.

Also, my aunt came into town without notice from either her or my father, so I had no clue I had a very valid reason not to be coerced into working on Saturday. Grrrr...

But anyway, here's the new family!

Kevin Higgins is the new Sim on the block. Because of the massive gender imbalance in New Jennerica, I chose to create another male, but everything else was randomized. His aspiration is Pleasure who wants to have 50 1st dates. His personality is 4/3/7/6/5, so he is a Cancer. He likes PlantSims who have grey hair (is that even possible?) But he doesn't like unemployed Sims.

Kevin Higgins' first order of business was to set a fire. Well, actually, it was to have a toaster pastry for breakfast, but a fire occurred instead.

After he choked down the charred ashes that constituted his lunch, he went outside to meet his neighbors.

He chatted up the pretty redhead without a ring on her finger.1

She couldn't seem to make up her mind about him. After first she was hostile and standoffish,

next she'd be coy and flirty.

On the other side of the lawn, Craig wasn't having much luck getting to know Annwn.

When Kevin tried to whistle at the girl, her reaction was so bad that he knew he should just give up on her.

He met Marie Rauscher, but ultimately she rejected him, too.

That night, after he ate alone, he decided to be proactive about his dating situation.

He went to the local music lounge.

But everyone who showed up after him had the wrong sort of "equipment."

Then Marielle Lim arrived. She was pretty and friendly...

and not at all interested in Kevin.

Kevin tried to lift his spirits by playing bass. He wasn't very good at it.

With table manners like that, it's no wonder Kevin is single.

Even elfin Elle Wood2 didn't want much more to do with Kevin than exchanging greetings and dropping off his mail.

The next night Kevin tried to play the bass again and he felt more confident.

With his newly found confidence, he approached Shelby Barrett.

She was a popular Romance sim in the neighborhood, and it was apparent that she earned her notoriety by being genuinely open and affable.

After he found that she wasn't repulsed by him, he invited her back home.

By the time they arrived, the sun had risen and it was time for bed.

But bedtime could wait until he had invited Shelby to "sleep" over.

When Kevin awoke, he thought it was just all a wonderful dream. He emerged from the bathroom to find his dream gal standing before him, still willing to be wooed.

He was struck dumb with happiness when Shelby accepted his invitation to move in with him.

Almost immediately after she moved in, Kevin indulged her interests by purchasing an easel for her.

Shelby turned out to be a terrible housekeeper because she had only two neat points to her name.

She at least understood the importance of pest control and successfully eradicated the roaches.

The shininess of the relationship and the living arrangement was starting to dull. Kevin and Shelby spent little time with each other and found they had little in common. They made it a point to eat together every night after Kevin returned from work as a musician3, but the meals were consumed in silence.

Shelby brought the companionship back into the house: she invited over Arik. Never mind Kevin. He was at work, wouldn't be home for a couple of hours. That was enough time to spend with a fellow Romance Sim.

Arik seemed strangely hesistant when she outlined her plans for the evening.

"But what about Kevin?" He asked. "I don't think he'd like this to happen, especially in his own bed. And I have Gret... I mean, er, some regrets, yeah, regrets, about doing this to a friend."

But he eventually put his doubts aside and indulged Shelby in her evening aspirations.

Kevin had already left for when Shelby got up and made herself breakfast. She sat in the quiet home, chewing her pastry and listening to the hum of the fridge. She wished for a TV, a stereo, hell, even a cheap dishwasher, something, anything loud and noisy to fill her head with thoughts so her mind didn't supply its own.

She couldn't distract herself from what she had done. Sure, she and Kevin weren't madly, crazily in love, but they got along okay, didn't they? He was nice and reliable, at least. He had invited her to live with him in this pretty community that was burgeoning with opportunities. He was willing to support her and her hobbies. Maybe they could even start a boutique to sell her art and sewn goodies. Maybe they could have a little girl to raise. She'd be so happy and Shelby would teach her to walk and talk, to live and love... but that would never happen. She ruined all of her chances for a happy ending of her own when she went to bed with Arik.

She napped restlessly on the couch until a car door's slam woke her.

Kevin came in and sat on the couch next to Shelby. She looked like she had something to say, and it wasn't going to be a happy something.

But Shelby looked like she could use a hug, a bit of comfort. She started to settle under one arm as she smiled fondly at the freckles on his other arm. Maybe everything would be okay.

Shelby remembered what she had to say, and pushed Kevin away. She tried not to see the hurt on his face as she blurted out the truth.

"Arik and I woohooed. I didn't mean it. Well, maybe I did, but now that I've thought about it I realized what a good guy you are, or were to me and I shouldn't have done it. I just wanted some passion back. And I think I want a baby. But I'm sorry I cheated on you, even though we aren't actually a couple or anything, but we are living together, and that means something, right? I should have stayed true to you. You're a good guy. I'm sorry."

Kevin sat for a minute or so. There were several false starts to his speech, but finally he stammered, "You want a baby?"

Shelby sighed and said yes. Kevin's next words were much brighter. "I think I can help with that!"

A soft lullaby soothed them to sleep.

The next morning Shelby was irritable. "You could have made some cereal for me. Or even just put the dirty dishes in the sink. God knows I'd be the Sim who actually cleaned them."

Kevin wisely kept his mouth shut and focused on finishing his cereal before the carpool arrived. What happened to the Shelby from last night?

As Shelby stared into the porcelain toilet bowl, she realized she was pregnant. It was all happening so fast. Before long, she'd be busy with a small little creature who needed her night and day. She also realized she was hungry.

Shelby finished the last painting she'd get to work on for a long time, or at least until the little one was a child. She tried to savor the last quiet moments in her home.

Kevin went straight to the fridge after work. He wasn't sure what to expect when he got home. Shelby was washing dishes. He realized she was just swishing soapy suds around and waiting for the courage to speak to find her. Bracing himself for the worst, he pretended he didn't notice her fidgeting.

"Kevin, I'm pregnant."

Kevin's bracing proved almost useless as he narrowly avoided chopping off his finger with the knife. This was wonderful news.

Just before turning in for the night, Shelby experienced her first "pop."

That Sunday was a quiet one. Shelby waddled around the house, resolving to be the best mother she could for her child. To satiate her driving need for companionship, though, she decided to make some platonic friends. Friends only. Friends she wouldn't sleep with.

Playables: 12
Commerical lots: 2
College fund: $5037 (it's coming along!)
Population: 24 (playables x sim multiplier of 2)

1 That pretty redhead is Kaylynn Spitzig, and she married into "old" Jennerica right away. I will have her in this town before long, muhahahaha!
2 Oh, Elle, your elfin ears will be included one day, too.
3 Kevin is in one of the lower positions of the music career track. He'll probably stay on those lower rungs, since I play with Pescado's Harder Jobs hack. Gameplay masochism, I can has.

Shelby Barrett is a Romance Sim. Currently, she hopes to woohoo 20 Sims. She likes creative fellas with makeup who don't have a good job. She's also a libra (2/8/2/6/7)

In the picture where Shelby was crying, it was actually because of a miscarriage. I just couldn't have her cheat with Arik, have a miscarriage, and then happily move on to the next pregnancy like nothing ever happened. But she seemed so sad about it, I thought she ought to have a little one. Especially since I already bought a crib, changing table, and toddler toys.

I am glad that Kevin and Shelby were able to work it out. I like them together. :)

Me, too! It seemed like Shelby was the only Sim who would have Kevin, so it's good they could work things out. Every other Sim was like, "Ew, Kevin!" Personally, I don't see anything wrong with him, but townies aren't exactly denizens of good taste.

Poor Kevin had quite the rough start of things, what with starting out with a fire and then having such a bad turn of things with relationships. I'm glad that things worked out between him and Shelby, even if they did get quite a bit rough there for a while.

I like how all of your sims have such personality to them. Each one has something unique and interesting about them. I really like your BACC. :)

Aw, thank you! I have an inkling of what each Sim will be like after I make them, but a SimWeek's worth of gameplay is what really defines them.

Poor Kevin has terrible luck. The fire wasn't too bad (I was thrilled), but the constant rejection for dates nearly sent him into aspiration failure. I'm glad he found Shelby, despite the fact she's a Romance Sim who wants to woohoo every other Sim.

Kevin is adorable. :3 I'm starting to fall quite in love with freckled sims, lol. I hope that Shelby finds solace in having friends - and I can't wait to see their kids. 8D

Golly, I thought I replied to this a while ago. I'm sorry!

Aren't these freckled skintones awesome? They turn any Sim into something special, I think.

Shelby seems to have settled down after her indiscretion with Arik. Even though they aren't married, I'd hate for her to do that to Kevin.

Lol, it's totally fine. I now have to resist the urge to make ALL NEW SIMS freckled, because they should be. 8|

Hey, welcome to Jennerica, Kevin! (I know I don't live there and I can't technically welcome him but I hope you know what I mean^^)
Another cool update in your BACC, I love the "real" feeling it has: for Kevin like in RL, it is actually not that easy to instantly find love and live happily ever after.
Or maybe I'm growing tired of the good old equation mom+dad+kid=family. I think playing this challenge did this to me, somehow it widens the players horizon :D
Anyway I have a good feeling about this household, looking forward to see how life treats them in the future.

Thanks! Kevin has had to compromise, but I think it's worth it for what comes next ;) Honestly, I'm worried about getting tired of the regular family situations in Jennerica... I guess that's why there's only a couple of families like that.
